Still Got Sciatica? Or Just a Stubborn Glute?

Have you been dealing with ongoing leg pain and wondering why it just won’t settle? Sometimes, what feels like sciatica may come from somewhere else — like a tight or overloaded glute muscle.
Why the Glutes Matter
The glutes — the large muscles at the back of the hips — work hard daily to support movement, posture, and stability. When they tighten up or become overloaded, they can create pressure on surrounding muscles. In some cases, this can even mimic nerve-type discomfort.
What It Might Feel Like
When the glutes are involved, you may notice:
A deep ache or tightness in the buttocks
Burning or sharp sensations in the hip or thigh
Discomfort that doesn’t usually travel past the knee
Pain that moves further down the leg may involve other structures, such as the sciatic nerve, which is why it’s important to get the right assessment.
A Simple Stretch to Try
One way to gently release tension in the glutes is with a stretch:
Lie on your back.
Cross one ankle over the opposite knee.
Gently pull the uncrossed leg toward your chest.
Hold for around 30 seconds, then switch sides.
You should feel a stretch through the hip and buttocks. If this movement eases the tension, your glutes may be contributing to the discomfort.
(Tip: Move slowly and only to a level that feels comfortable. Stop if you feel pain or anything unusual.)
