How your lower legs might be messing with your back — and what to do about it
Feeling stiff in your lower back?
You might be surprised to learn that your calves — yep, those lower leg muscles — could be part of the problem.
At ReachHealth, we often see patients whose back pain isn’t exactly where the issue started. It’s part of our “whole body” approach — because the human body is deeply connected, from your toes right up to your head. The Problem: Tight Calves, Tense Back
When your calf muscles are tight, they can change the way you walk and stand. That affects your posture, strains your hips and spine, and may lead to persistent lower back pain.
Scans don’t always tell the full story. You might have a disc bulge or an old injury on your MRI — but what’s causing your pain right now could be something else entirely. Try This Simple Calf Stretch
This easy stretch might help take pressure off your lower back by addressing tension in your calves.
Stand facing a wall.
Step one foot back, keeping the heel on the ground.
Bend your front knee and gently lean into the wall.
You should feel the stretch in the calf of your back leg.
Hold for about 30 seconds, then switch sides.
Do this stretch daily. It’s a great way to reset your posture and support your lower back from the ground up.
It’s All Connected
This tip is part of our video series on how pain doesn’t always match your scan — and how simple movements can offer big relief. By taking a more holistic approach, you might find solutions that scans alone can’t explain.
